OTDR Testing & Fibre Certification

Tier 1 and Tier 2 certification testing for data centres and enterprise networks — calibrated equipment, recognised methods and reports that clients, consultants and manufacturers accept first time.

Tier 2 OTDR testing at the patch panel — every connector and splice located and measured.

★ Why It Matters

Evidence Your Client Signs Off

A fibre link is only as good as the evidence behind it. Certification testing proves the installation meets the design and the standard — and it is usually what stands between a contractor and payment, or a client and a manufacturer warranty.

We test new installations at handover and existing networks before upgrades, and we deliver native result files plus a clear summary that anyone on the project can read.

An OTDR trace shows where loss happens along the link: reflective connectors, non-reflective splices, bends and the fibre end.

Tier 1 vs Tier 2

Reading the Link, Not Just the Total

Tier 1 testing uses a light source and power meter (OLTS) to measure total insertion loss and length — the pass/fail figure most specifications ask for.

Tier 2 adds bi-directional OTDR. The trace shows the loss of every connector and splice and where it sits on the route, so a failing link can be located and fixed instead of guessed at.

Services

Testing We Provide

New builds, handovers, upgrades and fault finding.

★ Most requested

Tier 2 OTDR Certification

Bi-directional OTDR traces for every link, with event tables and loss against your budget.

Tier 1 OLTS Certification

Insertion loss and length using light source and power meter, with recorded reference method.

End-Face Inspection

Every connector inspected and cleaned to IEC 61300-3-35 before it is tested or handed over.

Pre-Upgrade Testing

Baseline testing before 100G, 400G and 800G migrations so the optics work first time.

Fault Location

OTDR location of breaks, macro-bends and high-loss events on existing routes.

Remediation & Retest

Failing links cleaned, re-terminated or re-spliced and retested — you get a complete pass set.

Process

How We Certify a Link

  1. Inspect & cleanEvery end-face inspected; cleaned and re-inspected if needed.
  2. Set referenceOLTS reference set with the correct method and recorded.
  3. TestTier 1 loss and length, plus bi-directional OTDR for Tier 2.
  4. AnalyseResults checked against the standard and your loss budget.
  5. ReportNative files, PDF summary and calibration certificates.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2?

Tier 1 measures total loss and length of a link. Tier 2 adds OTDR testing, which shows where loss occurs along the link — at each connector and splice — so problems can be located and fixed.

Will your results support a manufacturer warranty?

We test to the methods manufacturers require and supply native result files. Tell us which warranty programme applies so we can confirm the exact reporting format.

Why test in both directions?

A one-way OTDR measurement can show a splice as a gain or exaggerate its loss when the two fibres differ. Averaging both directions gives the true event loss.

Can you fix failures you find?

Yes. We can clean, re-terminate or re-splice failing links and retest, so you receive a complete pass set rather than a list of problems.

Need Links Certified for Handover?

Tell us the number of links, fibre type and the standard you need to meet.
